Slow Burn
A short birthday poem
Early morning whispers in the perked up ears of our little visitor Our friendly neighborhood visitor The instructions are simple: “Rest and digest” I find the chipmunk sitting atop our front step, taking in the day He listens intently while his body slows to a halt I, too, pause my ripping and running to drink in the sight I saw more than a child should’ve But I never saw a chipmunk Not before moving here Now I look forward to our morning meetings No Teams notifications No talk of AI Just a sweet little face whose nose wrinkles against the wind I ask him his plans What’s next for the day He returns what’s been whispered And encourages me to do the same
